Breezewood

The Breezewood interchange has always seemed like the modern day equivalent of non-standard rail gauges. Lacking a common spacing for tracks, nineteenth century railroads sometimes could not be connected. By the time the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific were joined at Promontory, however, a standard was in place. No one really thought it was such a great idea to change cars in the Utah desert.

Originally created to circumvent federal restriction of toll interstates, Breezewood's odd interchange design resulted in the ongoing inability of Penndot to connect Interstate 70 directly to its multiplex with Interstate 76. Re-routing the Pennsylvania Turnpike to eliminate tunnels has only added to the confusion. Breezewood's businesses fear an actual connection would cause their demise.

It seems like it is time for a solution such as rendered above, involving existing overpasses and requiring some regrading. Then US 30 becomes the mother of all travel plazas. Don't hold your breath waiting for this one though!
