Shenandoah Park and Related Sites

Shenandoah National Park stretches for 105 miles in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Many of the trails and shelters in the park are not maintained by the Park Service but by volunteers from the Potomac Appalacian Trail Club. The following web guide will help you plan a visit to this magnificent area.

Many more excellent resources exist that we have not been able to list here. This list is but a small sample of the information available for visitors to this magnificent region. Lodging is available in Shenandoah National Park at Big Meadows, Lewis Mountain and Skyland. Camping is located at Big Meadows, Loft Mountain, Lewis Mountain and Matthew's Arm. Please see the Park website for more information and reservations. There are also trail cabins (primitive) that may be rented from Potomac Appalacian Trail Club, Details may be found on the PATC web site.

Back country camping is allowed with permit which may be obtained free at entry points to the park. NO FIRES are allowed other than in the fire rings constructed at trail shelters. During dry periods fires in these may not be allowed. NO CUTTING OF VEGETATION is allowed. LEAVE NO TRACE. Carefully follow instructions provided by park personnel at the time of your visit to protect this fragile environment.

There are many fine accommodations in the cities and towns surrounding Shenandoah National Park. You may wish to search them by name to learn what each offers. Charlottesville, Elkton, Front Royal, Harrisonburg, Luray, Stanardsville, Staunton and Waynesboro are such cities and towns that are close to park entrances.

You should be aware that the speed limit on the Skyline Drive is 35 miles per hour. That means that it would take three hours to drive it's entire length (105 miles).
