- By Bob Kirchman

At milepost 43 the road to trailhead parking is well marked. Follow the crushed greenstone path through groves of old hemlock and the remains of a forgotten orchard. Plenty of benches and a boardwalk make this a delightful easy ramble for all. At one junction with the White Oak Canyon Trail you may notice some interesting rock formations -- hexagonal columns of basalt crystal -- off to the side of the trail.

Update: The grand old hemlocks have suffered much devastation in recent times. Many have succombed to the woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) and some have fallen. Thus you will find a forest in transition.
